Postojna Cave in winter: the 2026-27 timetable

From November the cave runs three tours a day and the castle shuts at four. Here is the winter timetable, the Christmas show, and how to plan a day around both.

Winter is the quiet season at Postojna. The cave stays open every day of the year, holidays included, but the timetable shrinks to three tours, Predjama Castle closes earlier and the shuttle between them stops.

None of that makes winter a bad time to go. Inside the cave it is 10 °C in July and in January. You just have less room for mistakes.

The quick answer

From November to March the cave tours start at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00. Predjama Castle opens 10:00 to 16:00, last entry 15:30. Be at the cave 30 minutes before your tour. Between 25 and 30 December the Living Nativity runs in the cave from 13:30.

What are the Postojna Cave tour times in winter 2026-27?

10:00, 12:00 and 15:00 every day from November to March. April and October add more slots, and summer runs every hour.

The official timetable is a grid by month. In winter it has three columns ticked. Each tour takes about 1.5 hours, starting with the train and ending on foot near the olms. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early, since boarding starts 15 minutes before the tour.

The 15:00 tour is the last of the day. Miss it and there is no later one. We'd book the 12:00 slot in December: you get morning travel time and still finish in daylight.

What are Predjama Castle's winter opening hours?

10:00 to 16:00 from November to March, with the last entry at 15:30.

The castle is open all year. What you lose in winter is time: two hours less than in July. The park's own advice is to see the castle first and the cave in the afternoon, which works well in winter too. Castle at 10:00, lunch, cave at 15:00.

The cave under the castle is a different story. It's shut while its bats hibernate; our post on its season has the dates.

How do you get between the cave and the castle in winter?

By car, taxi or tour. The park's shuttle for combo-ticket holders runs only in high season.

The castle is about 9 km from the cave. The Two Adventures page says the shuttle runs in high season, so don't count on it between November and March. The ticket office arranges taxis. Parking costs €6 a day at the cave and €3 an hour at Predjama.

Without a car, a tour solves the whole problem. The cave and castle tour with tickets picks up in central Ljubljana every morning, with tickets for both sights and the drive between them.

When does the afternoon tour leave Ljubljana in winter?

From 1 November to 31 March the flagship's afternoon departure picks up at 12:15, 12:20 and 12:25. Morning pickups stay at 8:00, 8:05 and 8:10.

The listing gives three stops in central Ljubljana: the InterContinental Hotel at 12:15, City Hotel at 12:20 and French Revolution Square, under the obelisk, at 12:25. In summer the same departure leaves at 14:10, so in winter it leaves almost two hours earlier.

Our pick in winter is the morning run. With only three cave tours a day and the castle closing at 16:00, the early start leaves more slack if traffic is slow. The listing allows for delays of up to 15 minutes at pickup.

What is the Living Nativity in Postojna Cave at Christmas 2026?

A staged nativity performed inside the cave between 25 and 30 December, several times a day from 13:30. Adult presale tickets cost €39.00.

The Living Nativity page lists presale prices of €39.00 for adults (regular €45.00), €31.00 for students 16 to 25, €23.50 for children 6 to 15, €3.90 for children up to 5 and €99.00 for a family. The presale discount applies to visits on 25 and 29 December 2026.

It is a separate ticket from the regular cave tour, and none of the day tours on this site includes it. If you are in Slovenia over Christmas, book it early and go on your own or with a taxi from Postojna.

What should you wear to Postojna Cave in winter?

The same as in summer: a warm layer and closed shoes. The cave holds 10 °C all year, so in winter it can feel warmer than outside.

Dress for the walk, not the weather. The route has a 200 m climb at a 20% gradient and the floors are damp. Rain jackets can be hired at the cave for €8. Leave big bags in the car or the lockers at Expo, since the park advises against backpacks and umbrellas inside.

Outside is where winter bites. The walk up to Predjama Castle and its many stairs can be cold and slick, so take gloves and shoes with grip. More detail in our guide to the cave tour.
