Postojna Cave with kids

A train into a mountain, a castle with a torture chamber and blind “baby dragons”: Postojna is an easy sell to children. Here is how to make the day work, and what everyone should wear.

The park welcomes families, and children aged 14 and under must be with an adult. The cave suits kids far better than the castle: strollers ride the train and use the paths. The castle has no room for them.

The other thing families get wrong is clothing. It is 10 °C underground in every season.

The quick answer

On the official combined ticket, children up to 5 pay €2.00 and children 6 to 15 pay €29.90. Folding strollers ride the cave train, and the paths take strollers up to 80 cm wide. Predjama Castle is stairs all the way, so bring a carrier. Pack a warm layer and shoes with grip, even in August.

Is Postojna Cave good for kids?

Yes, and the park pitches it at them: the cave train, the olms it calls baby dragons, and the castle of the “cheeky Knight Erazem”.

Babies in prams are welcome too, and the toilets have changing mats. The hard parts are the uphill stretch in the cave and the castle stairs, both covered below. One parent on the half day wrote: “Amazing caves, my daughter was in awe.”

How much do children pay?

On the official Two Adventures ticket, children up to 5 pay €2.00 and children 6 to 15 pay €29.90. On tours, child rates follow each operator’s age bands.

From 24 October to 1 November 2026, family tickets let up to two children under 15 in free with two adults. Tours count ages differently, so check before you book:

Can you bring a stroller to Postojna Cave?

Into the cave, yes: the paths and ramps take strollers up to 80 cm wide, and folding ones go on the train. Into Predjama Castle, no.

Strollers also work in the Vivarium and the EXPO exhibition. The castle tour is not suitable for prams or buggies because of its many stairs, so bring a baby carrier for that half of the day, and leave the stroller in the car or van.

How hard is the cave walk for small legs?

Manageable for most children, with one hard bit: a 200-metre climb at a 20% gradient, then a similar descent, with no way out in between.

The footpath is 1.2 km of non-slip concrete. Tired toddlers end up on shoulders, so plan who carries. One guest on the Trieste tour warned: “Be aware of fast paced walking in cave, often uphill.”

What should you wear to Postojna Cave?

A warm layer and closed shoes with grip: it is 10 °C all year, the path can be damp, and the flagship listing says flip-flops are not recommended.

Think autumn walk, not summer stroll. One guest wrote: “For the caves, I would recommend packing sweatpants and some kind of sweater because it is chilly down there.” Forgot yours? The park hires out rain jackets for €8, and another guest noted “they have cloaks at the front door for rent”.

Children feel the cold faster than adults. Add a hat for the youngest.

What should you bring, and what stays behind?

Pack light: backpacks, large bags and umbrellas are better left in the lockers at the EXPO pavilion, and food is not allowed in the cave.

  • A warm layer for every person, even in August
  • Shoes with grip; no flip-flops
  • A baby carrier for the castle
  • Snacks and water for before and after the cave
  • Your QR tickets on your phone or printed
  • A phone or camera without flash

Snacks matter on a tour. One guest wrote: “Take snacks with you as there is not a lot of time to sit and eat anything and the tour takes a while.”

What will kids enjoy most?

The train ride, the olms and the castle’s armour and torture chamber; from May to September, children from age 6 can also tour the cave under the castle.

At the EXPO pavilion children can try their hand at driving the cave train, the park says. The Vivarium, 50 metres from the cave entrance, shows the olms up close at your own pace. In the castle, the attic is full of swords, halberds and crossbows. See Predjama Castle for the full visit.

Which tour suits a family?

The half day with all tickets: 5.5 hours, a group of up to eight, both tickets paid, a child rate from age 2 and infant seats available.

One parent who did it wrote: “We traveled with our 3 small children - ages 6, 4, and 1 - and the tour was perfect for our family. The company provided car seats which made it very easy for us to enjoy with no added stress.” If your kids nap in the morning, the flagship runs an afternoon departure every day; its child rate needs two paying adults.
