Visiting Predjama Castle

A white front wall set into a cave mouth, halfway up a cliff, with a rebel knight’s legend behind it. Here is how to see Predjama Castle without rushing it.

Predjama Castle has sat in the middle of a 123-metre cliff for more than 800 years, the park says, and it calls it the largest cave castle in the world, listed in Guinness World Records. It is about 9 km from Postojna Cave, which is why nearly every cave trip adds it.

The visit is short and steep. Below: tickets, the app tour, what’s inside, the stairs, and how to get there without a car.

The quick answer

The castle alone is €24.00; the Two Adventures ticket with Postojna Cave is €49.90. The guided tour runs on an app included in the ticket, in 19 languages, or you rent an audio guide for €2.90. It is open every day, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Expect a lot of stairs: no wheelchairs, no strollers.

How much is a Predjama Castle ticket?

€24.00 for an adult on its own, or €49.90 together with Postojna Cave on the official Two Adventures ticket.

On the combo, students 16 to 25 pay €39.90, children 6 to 15 pay €29.90 and children up to 5 pay €2.00. Only the cave part is fixed to a time slot: the castle can be visited any day within 30 days of your cave tour.

The castle has its own ticket office in front of the entrance, which takes cards and cash.

What are Predjama Castle’s opening hours in 2026?

It is open every day of the year, and the hours run by season; last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

Hours from the official timetable:

MonthsOpening hours
November to March10:00 to 16:00
April and October10:00 to 17:00
May, June and September9:00 to 18:00
July and August9:00 to 19:00

How is the Predjama Castle tour guided?

Through an app included in the ticket, in 19 languages. If you would rather not use your phone, rent an audio guide at the castle ticket office for €2.90.

The visit is self-paced, so download the app before you arrive. One guest on the half day wrote of “a quite good audio guide for the castle”. The flagship tour lists an audio guide in Predjama Castle among its inclusions.

Time is the catch on a tour. One guest wrote: “Felt a little rushed through the castle and had to skip some audio as we were pressed for time.” Skip the slower rooms if you have to, not the attic.

What is inside Predjama Castle?

An armoury, a chapel, a kitchen, a torture chamber and an attic with plate armour and medieval weapons, with the cave running in behind the walls.

The attic collection covers lances, halberds, swords, hammers, bows and crossbows, and the park points to its view over the valley. Below the castle, the river Lokva disappears underground.

Opinions on the interior vary. One guest wrote that the castle was “even more impressive in person with lots on exhibit”; another wrote: “Predjama castle is ok, was not impressed with the interior.” Go for the setting first.

What is the legend of Erazem of Predjama?

Erazem was a rebel knight who, the legend says, held out against an imperial siege of the castle for more than a year.

Behind the castle there is a network of secret tunnels, from where, the park writes, Erazem set out on his raids. His end is less heroic: he reportedly died while using a toilet, after a servant betrayed him.

The park also says the castle has hosted film crews and caught the eye of George R. R. Martin.

Can you visit the cave under Predjama Castle?

From May to September, on a separate €24.00 ticket: a tour of the two upper levels takes about 45 minutes and suits children from age 6.

The Cave under Predjama Castle spans four floors and is the second-longest show cave in Slovenia. A colony of bats lives there, so it closes during their hibernation. The park’s tour timetable lists the cave tour for May to September, while its Predjama page says June to August. Go by the timetable and check your date. None of the day trips on this site includes it.

How do you get from Postojna Cave to Predjama Castle?

It is about 9 km along a local road. Combo-ticket holders can take the park’s shuttle in high season, a ride of up to 20 minutes, and the ticket office can arrange a taxi.

With a car it is easy: parking in front of the castle costs €3 per hour. One guest on a tour wrote that “its a 10 min drive to the castle” from the cave. Without a car it gets harder: the shuttle only runs part of the year, and a tour takes care of the transfer. See Ljubljana to Postojna for every option.

No car? The small-group tour drives you from the cave to the castle in a minivan of up to eight.

Is Predjama Castle hard to visit?

For anyone with limited mobility, yes: the park says the many steps make it unsuitable for wheelchair users and strollers.

One guest wrote: “Lots of uneven steep steps in the castle.” Another put it more bluntly: “FYI the castle is all steep stairs and the caves are very cold - so plan accordingly!” Bring a baby carrier rather than a stroller; more in Postojna with kids.

Two more rules: no pets inside the castle, and no drones anywhere near it, because rare birds nest on the rock face above.
