Why does the cave close in winter?
A colony of bats lives in it, and visitors are not allowed in while they hibernate.
The cave stays at a mild temperature, which is why the bats use it. The park closes it for their winter sleep. This is a rule for the animals, not the weather, and there is no winter exception.
The park has not published the 2027 dates yet; they will appear on the tour timetable.
What is the tour of the cave under the castle like?
About 45 minutes through the two upper levels, easy enough for children from age 6.
The park calls it the second largest show cave in Slovenia. The regular tour covers the upper levels; the lower floors are for adventure caving tours booked by email. A ticket costs €24.00 on the official ticket page, the same as the castle.
No train here: you walk. If you have already done Postojna and want a second cave, this is the add-on.
What are Predjama Castle's opening hours in 2026?
From 10:00 to 16:00 in winter, up to 9:00 to 19:00 in July and August. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
The castle opens every day of the year. Inside, a guided tour on an app in 19 languages comes with the ticket; a rented audio guide costs €2.90. There are many stairs, so the castle does not suit strollers or wheelchairs, and drones are banned because rare birds nest on the rock face above.
