Booking choice: The cave and castle tour with tickets, from $131 per person. Check dates Tour details
Postojna Cave Park sits just outside the town of Postojna, south-west of Ljubljana on the A1 motorway. Buses run hourly, trains stop in town, and the motorway exit is 2 km from the park.
The cave is the easy part. Predjama Castle, about 9 km further along a local road, is what decides between public transport, a car and a tour.
The quick answer
By car: under an hour on the A1 to exit 41, 2 km from the park, with parking at €6 a day. By bus: hourly from Ljubljana to Postojna. By train: to Postojna station, then about 25 minutes on foot. For the castle you need the park’s seasonal shuttle (combo tickets only), a taxi or a tour. Tours with both tickets start at $121 per person.

How far is Postojna Cave from Ljubljana?
Under an hour by road, the park says, via the A1 motorway to Postojna exit 41, which is 2 km from the park.
Postojna lies roughly the same distance from Ljubljana, Portorož, Rijeka and Trieste, and Venice and Zagreb are about two hours away. One guest on the small-group tour wrote of a “45 min drive to the caves”.
| Option | How it works | Reaching the castle |
|---|---|---|
| Bus | Hourly to Postojna; a local bus to the park | Seasonal shuttle or taxi |
| Train | To Postojna station, then a 25-minute walk | Seasonal shuttle or taxi |
| Car | A1 to exit 41, parking €6 a day | Drive 9 km, parking €3 an hour |
| Tour with tickets | Pickup in Ljubljana, both entries paid | Included |
| Tour without tickets | Pickup in Ljubljana, entries paid on the day | Included |
Rather skip the timetables? The flagship picks up in central Ljubljana with both tickets paid.
Check dates for the cave and castle tour with ticketsCan you take the bus from Ljubljana to Postojna Cave?
Yes: buses run hourly from Ljubljana to the bus station in Postojna town, and a local bus links the bus station, the railway station and the cave park.
The park also publishes a timetable for its own Postojna Cave bus stop on its travel page. Check the times the day before: a missed connection can cost you your tour slot, and changing the time costs €2 per ticket within 24 hours.
Is the train a good option from Ljubljana?
For the cave, it works: Postojna is on the Vienna to Venice railway line, and from the station it is about a 25-minute walk to the park.
The walk is fine in dry weather. With small children or rain, take the local bus from the station instead. The castle is the problem again: from the cave you still need the shuttle or a taxi.

Should you drive from Ljubljana to Postojna?
If you want the castle on your own schedule, yes: parking costs €6 for the day at the cave and €3 per hour at Predjama.
The A1 is a toll motorway, and cars need an e-vignette from DARS, the motorway operator. A car also lets you follow the park’s advice: Predjama in the morning, the cave after lunch.
Travelling in a motorhome? There is a parking area 250 metres from the cave entrance, open April to October, at €25 a night, per the parking page.

How do you get from Postojna Cave to Predjama Castle without a car?
Take the park’s shuttle if your dates fall in its season, or ask the ticket office for a taxi.
The shuttle is for holders of combined cave and castle tickets, runs only part of the year, and the ride takes up to 20 minutes, per the Two Adventures page. Outside that season, it is a taxi or nothing. Without a car, that is the main reason to book a tour.

Want the castle transfer solved? The flagship drives you from the cave to Predjama Castle with both tickets included.

If you don’t drive, mostly yes: it solves the castle transfer and the timing. Inside, the park’s guides and the castle app do the guiding either way.
Expectations matter here. One guest on the half day wrote: “This is not so much a tour but transportation and entrance tickets to the caves and castle. Very little commentary from the guide.” Another, on the Bled day, saw it differently: “Your guide drives you, provides history along the way, at the destination site, explains exactly where to get tickets”.
Pickups differ. The flagship stops at the InterContinental at 8:00, City Hotel at 8:05 and French Revolution Square at 8:10, with an afternoon departure every day. The half day meets at the Eurostars uHotel at 8:30, the small-group tour opposite City Hotel at 8:20, and the Slovenian Wander tour picks up at your accommodation.
Fine with paying entry on the day? The small-group tour has the lowest fare here, in a minivan of up to eight.

On the Bled day, entrance tickets are optional and paid on the day: the listing quotes the cave and castle from €46.50, the pletna boat at €20 and Bled Castle at €19. The Piran day includes both cave and castle tickets and ends on the coast. Staying in Croatia or Italy? There are versions from Zagreb, without tickets, and from Trieste, with both.
